Helpful Hints: How to Move Heavy Items

0

We’ve all found ourselves in the position of having to move a heavy item at one point or another. Whether it’s moving furniture into a different room, removing an old appliance to make way for a new one, or moving out of your home, there are a few simple things to keep in mind to make your moving jobs easier. First and foremost, remember that using your brain more than your brawn can keep injuries at bay. Here are some tips on how to make moving heavy objects a breeze:

  • The cardinal rule of lifting: Lift with your legs, not with your back. A hurt back will keep you from lifting even the lightest of items, so it’s best to protect your biggest asset.
  • Remove jewelry and loose fitting clothing. In case there is an accident, you don’t want a heavy item to take you down with it!
  • Plan your route. Nothing is worse than finally getting an item to the doorway only to figure out that it won’t fit through.
  • Pushing is oftentimes easier than pulling.
  • Sliding items on the floor saves you from having to lift. Just be sure that the floor won’t get damaged while sliding. If you think it will get scratched, use an old towel or blanket underneath the item; doing so will also make the item slide more easily.
  • Dismantle it. For things such as dressers or desks, take the drawers out before you move it. If it can be taken apart into smaller parts, do it…you’ll be thankful you did at the end of the moving day.
  • To get a dolly under a heavy item when you’re by yourself, put the dolly against a wall and then walk the heavy item onto it…this will keep the dolly from falling over.
  • If you don’t have a dolly, get inventive! Skateboards or kid’s scooters can help in a pinch. For really large items, you can use lengths of pipes or poles. Roll the item over them, then as they become free, take them and place them in front again to keep the item moving forward.

Once you arrive at your Lock Up Self Storage location, you’ll have handcarts and dollies at your disposal. And with large elevators at every Lock Up, you won’t have to worry about navigating stairwells with your heavy items.

Transitioning? Turn to A Self-Storage Facility!

0

A common myth associated with storage units is their only use is for people who are “pack racks” or “hoarders” – Someone who has a hard time of letting go, and needs to store everything and anything.

In reality, nothing could be further from the truth. In today’s transitioning society, full of job transfers and temporary living arrangements, self-storage units fulfill a very real need. Instead of being forced to sell or donate many valuable and cherished belongings, a person in a transitioning period can turn to a self-storage unit.

Reasons to Use Self Storage

Self storage units are needed for an array of reasons, including:

  • Temporary job transitions – A large percentage of self storage units are rented by people who are in between permanent residents. A common cause of this is someone who is taking a temporary job out of town, like an internship, co-op, or residency assignment.
  • De-cluttering a home to sell – When selling a home, one common and practical tip is to streamline and de-clutter. This helps open up the home, making it more inviting and appealing. Climate controlled storage units offer a practical and low-cost solution.
  • Transitioning college students: The life of a college student or new graduate can be unbalanced and unpredictable. A storage facility offers an easy and affordable solution.

First Time Storage Tips

Planning ahead will ensure that your move goes smoothly. Before you move your valuables into just any self-storage facility, keep a couple of the following criteria in mind:

  • Security: If you are leaving town for an extended period of time, it is important to choose a facility that places a premium on security. Quality locks and surveillance equipment are a must.
  • Hours of Operation: The self-storage unit you choose should have a point of contact in case of an emergency. Also, make sure your contact knows how to reach you.
  • Access to Facility: Some facilities only offer limited access to the storage unit. If you require multiple family members or friends to have access, make sure you clear this with the self-storage facility.
  • Packing and Storing: When storing your items, label everything clearly, this allows for easy access. Also avoid over stacking and creating large, hazardous pyramids.

29th Annual National Night Out Event A Success!

0

The 29th annual National Night Out event held at The Lock Up Self Storage on Piper Blvd was yet again a resounding success. Florida’s Collier County Sheriff’s department teamed up with The Lock Up to host the event on August 7, 2012 in a continuing effort to show the community that safety is of the utmost concern.

The event was family friendly and had nearly 500 attendees who were treated with numerous fun activities. There were community and retailer booths, including a Lock Up Self Storage booth where Lock Up goodies such as shopping bags, pens, and keychains were handed out. In addition, The Lock Up held a raffle for 3 free months of storage.

The festivities included food and drinks from local restaurants and a local country music radio station provided the soundtrack for the evening. And of course, no Safetyfest National Night Out against crime would be complete without law enforcement demonstrations that were highlighted by performances by the K-9 unit, exciting moments of the jaws of life being used to chop up 2 cars, fire hoses turned on for kids to run through (a welcome relief to hot and humid evening), the award-winning Collier County D.A.R.E. sports car, and bomb squad robots.

The Lock Up couldn’t be more pleased with the turnout and the support that the Naples community provided. The people and families of Naples proved that a night full of music, food and fun can definitely be a safe night as well. A big Thank You to all who made this night possible! Here are some pictures of the night’s events…and remember, safety first!

The Hidden Costs of Moving and Storage

0

One of the biggest decisions you’ll need to make when moving to a new home is whether to hire a moving company or do all the work yourself. When making this decision, make sure you dig a little deeper to find the true cost. Be thorough in your research, and you’ll not only make the right decision, but you’re also likely to save a little money in the process.

Moving Companies

Choosing to use professional movers can facilitate a much smoother and faster relocation, but that convenience comes at a cost. On top of the company’s estimate, there are a number of possible surcharges that can quickly add up:

  • Stairs: multistory homes, high floor apartments without elevators
  • Disconnect fees: home appliance disconnection and reconnection
  • Specialty items: pianos, grandfather clocks, pool table
  • Packing materials: boxes, tape, shrink wrap, bubble wrap, package fillers
  • Shuttle trucks: limited access by the main truck because of narrow alleys or low wires
  • Long carries: walking distance from moving truck to front door past a certain threshold

Be sure you know what’s included in the base rate and what’s extra before entering into an agreement with a moving company. If you decide to save money by moving yourself, make sure you consider all of the extra expenses you’ll have to pay as well. Fuel costs are the obvious expense, but meals and lodging start to add up on long distance moves. If you’re recruiting the assistance of friends, expect to pay for their meals and beverages throughout the move.

Proper Storage

If you’re going to need storage space during or after your move, be sure that items are packaged well and stored in a secure self storage facility. These self storage resources will help you pack and store everything correctly to prevent costly damage.

Climate controlled self storage units are important when storing furniture, appliances, or other items susceptible to environmental damage. The cost is well worth it when the alternative means replacing your damaged or destroyed possessions.

New Environment

Even after the move is complete, long-distance relocation to a new state or climate can bring about a number of other potential expenses:

  • Higher cost of living
  • Increased auto insurance premiums
  • Travel expenses to visit friends or family
  • Drivers license, title and registration fees
  • Higher sales, income, and property tax rates
  • Costs to maintain your old house if it’s on the market
  • More spent on home or car maintenance in extreme climates

Be sure to stay current with your bills and take advantage of online account access so no payments are missed because mail wasn’t forwarded. Many of the expenses involved with moving yourself and your possessions are unavoidable, but they still need to be understood to avoid sticker shock.

How to Store Kids’ Hand-Me-Downs with a Self Storage Unit

0

When starting a family, you quickly realize how expensive things can get. One great way to cut the cost of having kids is to accept hand-me-downs from friends and family. Along with money, you’ll most likely find that storage space gets pretty limited the more people you add to your household. A good solution to both issues is to store the hand-me-downs that come your way in your Lock Up Self Storage unit until your kid grows into them. It’s a great way to keep your children dressed to the nines while they grow like weeds.

When baby comes, you’ll find that other families gladly pass along clothing they’ve been holding onto. Since children grow so quickly, many Moms find they only get to dress their babies in an outfit a handful of times before they’ve outgrown them. But they just don’t feel like they can throw good clothes away, so they wait for the next baby to come along. Take advantage so that you don’t break the bank.

Here are some tips to managing the outpouring of hand-me-downs that is sure to come once you’ve had your baby:

  • Wash and fold all of the clothes that are given to you.
  • If you get a mixed bag, be sure to organize the clothes into boys and girls.
  • Sort the clothes into ages/sizes.
  • Pack the clothes into sealed plastic bins. Be sure to clearly label each box with the sizes inside and if they are boy or girl clothes. This will make it much easier to pull out the next batch of hand-me-downs from your self storage unit as your baby grows.
  • When you are ready for the next size up, just grab the appropriate box and you and baby are set.

And remember, just because you have a great collection of various sized clothes for your baby, that doesn’t mean you can’t go shopping for cute baby clothes. You can still splurge and get the really cute clothes that you may have otherwise passed on by covering your bases with some hand me downs.

The Lock Up’s Chicago Wine Cellar

0

Do you enjoy wine? Have you thought about how nice it would be to collect fine wines, but held off because you don’t have a way to properly store bottles of wine? Well, hold off no longer. The Lock Up Self Storage in the River North neighborhood of Chicago has an affordable solution in their state of the art wine storage facility. And recently, they had a virtual tour created by Google, allowing you to experience the wine cellar for yourself before you go.

Use your mouse to click and drag to look around the space. Click the white arrows to move through the room and into one of the wine storage rooms on the left.

The elevator doors open onto a lovely room featuring a large wooden table and chairs. This is not your typical self storage facility. You truly feel like you could be in the cellar on a real vineyard. The front room is a great place to meet wine vendors, or even meet with some friends to sample a bottle from your collection before you go out for a nice meal at one of the many local restaurants within walking distance of The Lock Up.

Located on the lower level of the Lock Up facility, this wine cellar boasts beautiful amenities meant to enhance your wine storage experience but also ensure that your wine is stored with the utmost attention to the details that matter. For example, the while the wooden shutters look nice, they also serve a dual purpose. The shutters are angled down which not only creates privacy for each client’s wine collection, but this also diverts light away from the bottles, which is necessary to prevent wines from spoiling and becoming “light struck”. In addition, the lighting in the storage area is motion sensitive so that they only turn on when necessary.

While the appearance of the wine storage units is definitely impressive, no expense has been spared to provide the technology necessary for optimal wine storage conditions. The Lock Up has dedicated refrigeration equipment specifically for the wine cellar. This enables the wine storage area to be kept at a consistent, year round temperature of 55 degrees. In addition, there are advanced humidity control systems that ensure humidity levels stay between 60-70%. And in case you need it, documentation of these precise conditions can be acquired in the main office.

The wine storage units at The Lock Up Self Storage are designed to accommodate any number of bottles from personal collections up to the largest restaurant inventories. You can even have The Lock Up receive deliveries of wines from around the world. So now you have no excuse to start that fine wine collection. Just call or go to The Lock Up Self Storage in River North. You won’t be disappointed.

To get your fine wine collection started, call The Lock Up Self Storage in River North at (312) 464-1900 or visit the friendly and knowledgeable staff located at: 350 West Kinzie Street  in Chicago, IL.
