Preparing for Retirement: Storing Furniture and Antiques

0
Winter Car Storage
11676888 - vintage car in garage for winter

Ahh, retirement. I don’t know about you, but I look forward to retiring — sporting a tracksuit, eating dinner at 4:30 and playing cards at the club house amidst sunshine, palm trees and friends with plenty of free time.

Most likely, moving to a retirement community means downsizing on space. Mom and Dad’s new Florida retirement condo might not accommodate the beautiful mahogany Duncan Phyfe dining set on which you’ve been eating your Christmas dinners all your life.

But just because their retirement condo doesn’t have room for a 12-seat vintage dining set, you don’t have to part with your family’s antiques and treasures. You can safely store the items in a self storage facility for as long as you need.

Here are a few tips for storing those precious antiques in your preparation for retirement:

storing antiques for retirementFurniture – Polish wood pieces to give them an extra layer of protection, then wrap with an old blanket. Wrap table and chair legs in bubble wrap or blankets secured with tape. Leather pieces should also be conditioned prior to storing. Dissemble large pieces but be sure to keep all parts and hardware together.

China and Silverware – Stack plates and cups with a piece of paper in between. Store them in fabric boxes made specifically for china. Silverware should be polished before storing, and placed in a felt-lined box or bag.

Linens and Textiles – Wash them, but don’t bother ironing or starching them. Place them in an acid-free cardboard box lined with acid-free tissue paper to prevent yellowing.

Books and Records – Use acid-free boxes and tape. Store large, heavy books flat to avoid warping. Smaller books should be stored upright. Records should be stored in their individual sleeves and packed upright, but not too tightly. Use smaller- or medium-sized boxes and store the boxes on shelves to avoid crushing.

Remember that moisture, sunlight and extreme temperatures are usually the culprits when it comes to damaged antiques. Choose a storage facility that is climate controlled, heat controlled and most importantly secure. Inspect the items every few months to ensure they are being preserved, so you or your grandkids can enjoy them again someday.

If you have any other tips to share in regard to retirement and storing sentimental and family history items in self storage, feel free to drop us a line?

What Supplies Should I Have For My Storage Unit

2

If you want to keep your items safe in storage, it’s important to plan ahead and buy the right packing and moving supplies. While it’s possible to get away with a pickup truck full of lose items, bags and a few scrap boxes, this approach to self storage is a recipe for disaster in the long term.

Regardless of what you’re storing, it’s important to take extra steps to protect it. While the Lock Up’s self storage facilities are climate controlled, they won’t magically keep nature from taking its course and wearing down your valuables over time. And while you may plan on only keeping your items in storage for a few months, you never know how long you’ll have to use your storage unit.

While using the right packing techniques is certainly a large part of keeping items safe in storage, the other half of the battle is using the right packaging material. The following are just a few items to consider.

Boxes

When moving or storing items, the general rule of thumb is that if you think you have enough boxes, you probably need more. In addition to moving boxes both big and small, you also may need a couple specialty boxes like:

  • Wardrobe box
  • Glass cell kit
  • Dish cell kit

Locks

Even if your storage unit has electronic coded access, you may want to consider locks for some of the individual items in your storage locker in case an unauthorized person somehow gets access to your items. Depending on your security needs, you may want to invest in:

  • Padlocks
  • Disc locks

Wrapping

If you’re preparing items to move, you can never wrap them too much. Some of the wrapping supplies you’ll need include:

  • Bubble wrap
  • Shrink wrap
  • Newsprint
  • Packing peanuts

Covers

One item many people forget to bring use while moving and storing items is covers. Protect your valuables from dust and scratches by investing in the right types of covers, including:

  • Mattress cover
  • Sofa covers
  • Moving blanket
  • Picture pouch
  • Paper pads (instead of moving blankets)

Miscellaneous Items

Make sure you’re not forgetting anything by browsing through this list. By purchasing the right materials , you can not only stay more organized, but you may also save yourself from losing thousands of dollars of valuables.

  • Tape and tape dispenser
  • Humidity absorber
  • Measuring tape
  • Moving labels
  • Permanent markers
  • Utility knife
  • Ropes
  • Gloves
  • Stretch cords

If you’re using a Lock Up storage unit, you can feel free to purchase your moving supplies directly from us. Learn more about self storage by calling us today at (866) 327-LOCK.

Book, Magazine, and Media Storage Tips

0

A person’s collection of books, magazines, and other media can hold tremendous monetary or sentimental value. Care is required when storing these items, since they are particularly susceptible to environmental damage like dust, moisture, and pests. Following these suggestions will help you properly store your collections to preserve them for the future.

All Media

  • Label all boxes on a side that will be visible when stacked.
  • Use relatively small boxes, especially when packing books. Though light individually, several books can soon make a larger box too heavy to lift.
  • Use similarly sized boxes to facilitate stacking and maximize space.
  • Aim to completely fill boxes to prevent contents from shifting and to keep boxes at the bottom of a stack from being crushed.
  • Raise boxes off the ground using wood pallets or place them on plastic or cardboard.
  • Wrap boxes in plastic to protect against moisture or use waterproof plastic containers.
  • Use locking and fireproof containers for your most valuable items.

Print Media

  • Use climate-controlled self storage units to protect books and magazines.
  • Insert sheets of paper between books to prevent covers from sticking. Do not use newspaper, as the ink may transfer.
  • Place rigid cardboard sheets between magazines and comic books to prevent bending.
  • Alternate which side book or magazine spines are placed.

Tapes, Cassettes, and Digital Media

  • Analog recordings including tapes and cassettes are more susceptible to deterioration than discs, so store them in individual cases within archive-quality containers.
  • Tape media need to be stored away from any possible magnetic fields to prevent data loss.
  • Climate-controlled self storage units are recommended for tapes and cassettes in regions with freezing temperatures.
  • Discs are less susceptible to environmental damage than tape media, but must still be stored in scratch-free sleeves or wallets.

Proper storage and archive-quality packing materials are well worth the investment for the protection of valuable or irreplaceable items. A bit of extra time spent preparing all of your media for long-term storage will ensure that they can be enjoyed years down the road.

Know Before You Store

Plan Ahead Before You Use Self Storage

If you’ve never used self storage before, you may feel a little overwhelmed when you get to your storage unit. How should you protect your valuables? Why doesn’t there seem to be enough room in your storage unit? The Lock Up has been in the self storage business since 1976, so we know how things should be done. Check out the following tips before you start packing your Lock Up Self Storage unit with specific items:

  • Appliances: Should be thoroughly cleaned and dried. Keep freezer and refrigerator doors slightly ajar.
  • Bikes and other Metal Items: To preserve metal during storage, wipe all metal surfaces with a rag containing a few drops of machine oil.
  • Books and Documents: Pack books to protect their spines. Do not place boxes directly on the floor – use pallets or skids.
  • Dishes and Glassware: Cushion carton tops and bottoms with a layer of paper. Glass items should be individually wrapped.
  • Furniture: To save space in your storage unit, beds and tables can be disassembled. Wrap legs for protection. Cover wood and upholstered pieces.
  • Holiday Decorations: Reuse the original cartons for delicate ornaments. Pad with packing paper.
  • Lamps: Wrap lamp bases in padding. Wrap and place shades in separate cartons.
  • Mirrors: Store on edge, not flat.
  • Records and Record Players: Records should be stored on edge to prevent warping. Secure tone arm and turntable to prevent bouncing.
  • Tools: Long handled tools such as racks, brooms, hoes etc., can be tied in bundles.
  • Mattresses and Box Springs: Store on long edges for firmer support. Keep elevated from floor and covered for protection.

We hope this has been helpful. If you have more questions, feel free to call us at (866) 327-LOCK. Our self storage experts are standing by to answer your questions.

Electronics Storage Tips

0

With technology developing at a breathtaking rate, many people are finding that their electronic gadgets are piling up faster than ever. As soon as we get a new computer or camera, a better one comes out.

This explosion of new technology has created interesting electronics storage problems for many consumers. For example, are you going to hold onto your old laptop once you get a new one? If you’re a college student, are you really going to lug your desktop computer to and from school every semester? And what are you going to do with all the portable media that contains your family’s memories?

For many people, self storage is the perfect solution for these problems. If you’re going to utilize electronics storage or electronics parts storage, however, make sure you’ve taken the following steps to protect it from damage during storage:

Climate Controlled Electronics Storage

One of the biggest benefits of choosing one of the Lock Up self storage facilities is climate-controlled self storage. Most types of electronic devices can break down when the weather gets too hot, cold or humid. Climate control helps your electronics turn back on even after they’ve been sitting unused for years.

Store in Original Packaging

If you still have your electronic device’s original packaging, reuse that package for self storage. The package was designed to keep the device safe during transportation and storage.

Avoid Plastic Wrapping

Because plastic traps moisture and moisture can cause mold, you should avoid wrapping your electronics in plastic. Instead, use a breathable fabric like cotton to store protect your electronic devices.

Protect Glass

Protect the glass in your monitors, cameras and scanners from breaking during transportation by taking a few extra seconds to cover it with foam, bubble wrap or cardboard.

Store Batteries Properly

Lithium-ion batteries used in devices like laptops generally lose their charge much faster when they are stored either fully charged or completely empty. Most experts recommend storing these batteries with a 40% charge to get the maximum use out of them.

Back Up Media

Whether it’s stored in a storage facility or your basement, always make sure the software, pictures, music and video you want to keep is backed up somewhere. A jump drive, external hard drive or stack of CDs should be all you’ll need to make you’re your digital media remains safe.

Start Computers at Room Temperature

Many computers that have been sitting for a long time do not respond in cold temperatures. Because of this, computers should only be started once they’ve been allowed to warm up to room temperature. While this shouldn’t be an issue if you’ve stored your computer in a Lock Up climate-controlled unit, you could still run into a problem if you’ve transported your computer in extremely cold temperatures.
