Winter Blues? Let The Lock Up Help

0

When the mercury plunges, it’s not uncommon for daydreams about getting out of town to arise. The winter months can prove to be interminably long while longing for sunshine and warmth. When it gets so cold your breath could almost break, a cross country trip in an RV to warmer climes doesn’t sound so bad, right? Well, that’s not totally out of the question if you’re truly  considering it but are holding back simply because you have nowhere to keep your RV when you’re not on the road. The Lock Up Self Storage may just be able to help.

Several Lock Up locations have parking spaces available for lease and some even have, you guessed it, parking spaces large enough for an RV. Alright, so maybe you can’t take the month long trip along Route 66 to sunny California…yet. But, what better time to get a great deal on an RV than during winter when RV sales are most certainly on the decline? If you can find a deal on an RV now, you can store it at The Lock Up and use it for impromptu long weekend getaways. Then, whenever you find yourself at a point where you and your significant other can both take off work and the kids are out of school, you can take off at a moment’s notice. No booking expensive flights because you want to leave in under two weeks, just pack up some good food, fill her up, hit the wide open road and drive off into the sunset.

OK, it may be a pipe dream that you may or may not ever act upon, but The Lock Up Self Storage will be there for you either way, with parking spaces, drive in storage units, climate controlled storage units and so much more.

If you’re looking to purchase a vehicle so larger than your garage, call The Lock Up at 866-327-LOCK to find out about renting a parking space.

Five Ways The Lock Up Can Help You Achieve Your 2013 Goals

0

As you look back on 2012, it’s natural to reflect on all of the events that impacted your life, positive or negative. It’s also natural to begin formulating some New Year’s resolutions because of these events. The Lock Up Self Storage would like to be a part of making your 2013 New Year’s resolutions reality. You may not realize it, but having a self storage unit at The Lock Up can help make or break your resolutions. Here are five ways a Lock Up Self Storage unit can help you make 2013 the best yet:

  1. Make more money. The internet is the rising star of entrepreneurship and you can hitch your wagon to it by selling off all of the things that seem like clutter to you in your home to people who need or want it. Move all of the things you’re holding onto for that ever illusive garage sale into a Lock Up storage unit and list them on sites like Ebay and Craigslist. When a potential customer wants to purchase, you have a safe neutral meeting zone at The Lock Up…no worries about having strangers come to your home while you rake in the dough.
  2. Exercise. Having a storage unit allows you to have all of the seasonal exercise equipment you want without stressing about where to store it. Your winter skis and snowboards can be used now and then switched out for your summer jetski and bikes. Or, clear out the guest bedroom to finally make the exercise room you’ve been wanting. This way, when you have visitors, you’ll still be able to switch out your exercise gear for the bedroom set up.
  3. Socialize. Have you wanted to host wine pairing dinner parties for all your friends? No time like 2013! Certain Lock Up’s have wine storage available. Now you can stock up on all the wonderful wines you come across and store them in optimal conditions until you’re ready for your soiree.
  4. Travel. Everyone has items that they don’t want house-sitters to see while you’re out globetrotting. Place important and personal items in your Lock Up Self Storage when you have a trip scheduled and you’ll never worry that your neighbor or friend will find out your deepest secrets! Another perk while you’re away from home is that you can have any deliveries sent directly to your Lock Up location instead of getting delivered to an empty home.
  5. Destress. Clutter equals stress. You know it’s true. Get all of your home office tax papers out of your closet and into a Lock Up Self Storage unit. Take holiday decorations, off season clothing, all of the baby items your hanging onto for your next little bundle of joy, and any other items that you want to keep but don’t need daily and put them in a self storage unit. You’ll feel the stress melt away as you marvel at all of the space in your home.

The final hours of 2012 are winding down and we here at The Lock Up Self Storage want to extend our sincere thanks to our staff and tenants for a great year. Here’s to an even better 2013! Happy New Year!

Visit www.thelockup.com for information on how to get yourself a self storage unit and on your way to a happy, healthy & prosperous 2013!

House Sale Items

Now that the holidays have passed, it’s time to pack up all the decorations and find a place to store it all. Fortunately, The Lock Up Self Storage’s Holiday Special on storage units is still going. Until December 31st, 2012 you can get a 5’x5′ storage unit for as little as $25 for one month*. Now is the perfect time to take advantage of this special if you haven’t already. The New Year is just days away and it will be so much easier to keep your resolutions if you’ve cleaned up, organized your home and stored your holiday gear; and why not get a nice discount on your first month of storage while your at it?

If you’re having trouble getting motivated to take down your holiday decorations because storing them seems like such a hassle, here are some helpful tips.

  • Go take advantage of the huge post holiday sales and stock up on storage containers. Arts and crafts supply stores often have big discounts on bins made specifically for storing ornaments and lights because they can’t sell them during the rest of the year. Having such things on hand is really helpful.
  • Take things down in stages. Start with the smaller items first. Things like ornaments and lights need special attention when storing. Once all these are put away, move onto bigger ticket items like artificial trees and decorative things like train sets or nativity scenes.
  • Use paper plates to stack between holiday dishware. This can help prevent scratches and chipping during the months these items will spend in storage. Be sure to stack heavier items on the bottom of boxes and lighter, more delicate things on top.
  • Wash all holiday themed linens such as table runners, table cloths, napkins and towels. Do not bother ironing or starching them as they’ll need to be ironed once you pull them out next year and starch can damage fabrics that are stored for long periods of time by providing food for insects.
  • Clearly label all of your boxes so that next year, you won’t have to open every single box to figure out where things are.

Go to www.thelockup.com to find a Lock Up Self Storage nearest you.

*Until December 31, 2012, rent a 5’x5’ unit for as low as $25. A minimum of one month stay is required and availability is limited. If a 5’x5’ size unit is unavailable at your location, a slightly larger unit may be substituted for the same price, just talk to the site manager for details.  This Holiday Special is for new rentals only and is available at all Lock Up locations except for Northfield, Illinois.

Tips for a Successful Lock Up Auction

0

Every month, The Lock Up Self Storage facilities hold auctions to sell off the contents of abandoned storage units. If you’re the type that loves picking through garage sales or thrift stores for hidden treasures, then attending a Lock Up auction is definitely up your alley. Here are some tips on how to make your auction experience a fun and (hopefully) profitable one.

  • Arrive at the location on time or better yet, early. You wouldn’t want to miss any of the precious moments that you have to peer into the unit.
  • Bring a strong flashlight or hand held spotlight. You are not allowed to step over the threshold of the unit so you want to be able to illuminate the farthest, darkest corner to be able to get a gauge on what the contents are. Don’t bring anything that requires an outlet though, as that may not be an option.
  • Wear clothes that you don’t care about. Depending on the unit that you bid on, there may be dirty, greasy items that you’ll have to contend with and your clothes will catch the brunt of that.
  • Bring extra boxes with you. Not all people are experts at organizing and you may decide to bid on a unit that needs some serious reorganizing.
  • Be sure to have your entire day set aside. Once you win a bid on a unit, you only have 24 hours to completely clear the unit. That may mean you’ll be sorting and arranging your newly acquired items for hours.
  • Bring a willing friend to help. If you win a unit that has heavy items like furniture or appliances, you’ll probably need some help moving things.
  • Drive a truck or van to the auction. Arriving in a compact car won’t help you when you score a unit full of goodies. You need to have a vehicle that can haul all the things that come in the unit, or at least help to cut down on the number of trips to and from the facility until the unit is cleared.

Be sure to check the News section of The Lock Up Self Storage at the beginning of every month for the listings of auctions.

Holiday Travel Tips from The Lock Up

0

Travel is on many folks’ minds now that the holidays are afoot. With all the preparations for holiday gatherings and gift buying, getting ready for a trip is yet one more source of stress, but it doesn’t have to be; a little preparation will go a long way. Here are a few tips to help make your holiday travels more fun and less stressful.

Whether you’re going to Mom and Dad’s, to a resort to get away from it all, or to your favorite aunt’s house for the holidays, be sure to call ahead to see what they have there so you don’t have to pack it. Bulky items like hair dryers and irons can take up valuable packing space and easily put you over the 50 pound limit most airlines have. No need to pack such items if they’re going to be at your final destination.

Write a packing list. Just start writing down things as you think of them in the week or so before your trip on one list or in your phone/tablet. This can be a lifesaver when you’re packing your bag in the final hours before your flight and your time is limited. Forgetting to pack a phone charger or computer cord can put a real damper on your trip.

Pack your important medications in your carry on. Nothing is worse than arriving at your destination and not having the medications you need. Depending on when and where you’re traveling, you may not be able to get a hold of your doctor to get the medications you need.

Don’t wrap your gifts before you travel. Going through security or customs may require that you unwrap your handiwork anyway. If you’re particularly partial to the wrapping paper you bought, bring it along and wrap your gifts once you arrive.

If you’re traveling with others, split your clothes up between the pieces of luggage. This way, if one bag doesn’t arrive at your destination, you’ll still have some clothes. And be sure to bring some extra plastic bags. These are always good to have for toiletries that happen to burst open or for your dirty laundry.

If your luggage had been stored in a musty area, throw some scented fabric softeners into your bag. This is a good thing to do once you return home too. Be sure to store smaller bags inside of bigger bags to save on space. If you don’t have a clean, dry space to store your luggage, perhaps it’s time to look into a climate controlled unit at The Lock Up Self Storage near you.

How to Pack a Moving Van

1

When it’s time to use a moving van, there are a few key concepts to keep in mind. Packing your items into a large van requires some planning to prevent breakage during transport. Here are some tips for packing your things into a moving van:

  • You want to keep your largest, heaviest items close to the truck’s cab. Items such as refrigerators, washer/dryers, etc need to be the first ones loaded into your truck. Make sure to evenly distribute the weight on either side of the truck bed too, so as to avoid having a truck that pulls to one side.
  • Place mattresses and box springs along the truck’s walls. This will save space and also provide some cushioning for your other items. Be sure to tie them to the walls if possible. Disassemble bed frames, tie all of the pieces together and place along the sides of the truck. Use this same technique for any other long flat items like skis, headboards, mirrors or rolled up carpets.
  • Rent or purchase moving blankets. You can use these to move large items by placing the item on the blanket and sliding it. They also provide cushioning between items and prevent items from scratching one another.
  • Next in should be your heaviest boxes. Continue to evenly distribute weight throughout the bed of the truck.
  • Light and delicate items go in last. If there is a storage space in the cab of the truck, use that for the most delicate of items so they’re sure to not get crushed.
  • If you have a truck that has more space than you have items, try to keep your items packed low and spread out with your heaviest pieces on the bottom. You don’t want to stack all of your pieces in the back of the truck and leave a bunch of empty space at the door…the moment you accelerate, that stack of your items will go flying and you’ll likely end up with a bunch of broken things when you arrive at your destination.

Don’t forget that most Lock Up Self Storage facilities have a free move-in truck available for first time clients. These trucks have hand dollies and some moving blankets to help you during your move.
