<< LOCK UP MOVING LIFE HACKS PART 1

In an ongoing effort to make your life easier, The Lock Up Self Storage thinks beyond self storage units. We know you need to store extra stuff and we’re there for you, but we also consider what creates the need for self storage. One such situation is the dreaded move…a time of purging, rearranging and reassessing. Aside from being here for your storage needs, we’d like to offer some life hacks to you in case you’re about to endure a move. Here is the next installation of our four part series about life hacks we think are great stress reducers for those moving from one place to another.

  1. Leave clothes on hangers.
Why waste time taking clothes off hangers and folding them, only to have to do it in reverse when unpacking? Leave them on the hangers and use large garbage bags to group them. Place the bottom of a section of hanging clothes in a bag, pull it up to the top and secure the drawstring around the hangers. Done and done!
  2. Roll your clothes.
For the clothes you do have to pack, don’t leave them folded. This takes up a lot more space than necessary. Instead, roll your clothes. This will not only reduce wrinkles, but you’ll be able to fit more into a box at a time. Hint: do this when you’re traveling too…it’s a great luggage space saver!
  3. Label boxes on the sides.
You’re labeling your boxes, and that’s great. But if you don’t label them on the sides, and you have a stack of them in your new place, you won’t be able to see all your handiwork. Do your future self a favor and label on the side.
  4. Overestimate your box needs.
The last minute comes faster than you realize and you don’t want to be stranded with a bunch of items that you have to move one by one because you underestimated how many boxed you’d need for moving day. Plan ahead, save, collect, and then add a few more. You’ll be thankful you did.
  5. Plastic wrap your dressers.
This is especially great if you’re having professional movers help you on moving day. Instead of emptying all your drawers, just use a large roll of plastic wrap and seal everything in your dresser. This way, the drawers won’t open during the move, you don’t have to waste extra boxes, and your unpacking time will be dramatically reduced.

We hope these hacks help!
